The Plan

  • Peppermint Patty says since there are 16 ounces in a pound, subtract 16 until there is nothing left.

  • This will tell you how many pounds there are and how many ounces are leftover.

Let's Solve!

  • Start with 84 ounces

  • 84-16= 68, 68-16=52, 52-16=36, 36-16=20, 20-16=4

  • We subtracted "16" 5 times so there is 5 pounds

  • There are 4 leftover so there are 4 ounces leftover

The solution:

  • 84 ounces= 5 lb 4 oz

Let's try more!

  • 26 ounces= _ lb _oz

  • 32 ounces= _ lb _ oz

  • 70 ounces= _ lb _ oz

  • (Instead of subtracting 16 each time, you can use multiplies of 16: 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128)

  • 120 ounces= _ lb _ oz
