  • Subject: The man

  • which man?

  • Bring the the bag that is on the table.

Adverb Phrases

Modify verbs, adverbs, or adjectives.

Never a noun.

Answers: where? why? when? in what way?

Start with a preposition.

  • A racoon hid under de balcony.

  • subject: A racoon

  • where?

  • under the balcony.

Appositive Phrases

  • A word or group of words that renames or explains a noun or pronoun.

  • Give aditional information abou a noun.

  • Usually found between, before, or after commas (,)

Appositive Phrases

  • When appositives are nonessential to the meaning of the phrase they are placed between commas

  • example: Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the due date.

  • When the appositive is essential to the meaning, don't use commas

  • example: My brother Tony loves motorcycles.

Verbal Phrases

  • A verbal is a verb used as a noun, adjective, or adverb.

  • example: Running is my favorite activity.


  • example: Two cats climbed over my window.

    When it includes modifiers, it is called a Verbal Phrase

    example: Running through the mountain is my favorite activity.

Verbal Phrase ( as an adjective)

  • it forms Participle

  • Present Participle ( - ing)

  • ex: The crying baby is hungry

    Past Participle ( - ed)

  • That demolished building was old.

  • The food, left on the table, was too cold to eat.
