  • More than 23,000 men from Maine served in the army during WWI (5% of population)

  • About 1,000 of these men died fighting in Europe

  • Maine also helped the U.S. become the "arsenal for democracy"

Bath Iron Works

Produced destroyers for the U.S. Navy at record speed.


The William P. Frye ship built in Bath was the first American ship sunk during WWI.

Maine Women in WWI

Went to work in factories (many for the first time). Made munitions at the Portland Company. Shoes, coats, or blankets in textile mills in western Maine. Aroostook County potatoes being sent to the front too.
