Conciseness

A sentence is concise when it only contains the most effective words or phrases.


Concise writing does not always have the fewest words, but it always uses the stronger ones.


Concise sentence eliminates unnecessary details or verbiage (excessively lengthy or technical speech).

Wordy:

He was terribly late to his English class due to the fact that he had to finish his math test.

Concise:

He was late for English because he had to finish his math test.

 (The meaning of the sentence is clearer, isn't it?)

Wordy:

Citizens who knew what was going on voted the president out of the office. (Too wordy!)

 

Concise:

Knowledgeable citizens did not vote for the president.

( Don't you think the 2nd sentence is a lot easier to understand?)

One strategy to ensure concise sentence is by replacing vague words with more powerful and specific words.

  • Using more specific words can lead to a more concise writing

  • Allows readers to completely understand the messages in the writing better.

I just CUT all the unnecessary words. Those words mean the same thing and add nothing new.
