What is Energy?

Energy is the ability to do work or cause change

When energy is transferred, the object upon which the work is done gains energy

Power = Energy Transferred/Time

3

Power and Energy

Power depends on the amount of energy that is transferred in a certain amount of time

For example, if you have two objects moving something for the same distance but one moves it faster, then it has more power

4

What are the Two Types of Energy?

The two basic types of energy are kinetic energy and potential energy

1. The energy an object has due to its motion is called kinetic energy

2. Energy that results from the position or shape of an object is called potential energy

5

Kinetic Energy

  • The kinetic energy of an object depends on both its speed and mass

  • The faster an object moves, the more kinetic energy it has

  • Kinetic energy increases as mass increases

  • Kinetic Energy = 1/2 x Mass x Speed2

6

Potential Energy

  • Potential energy means that it has the potential to do work

  • Potential energy related to an object's height is called gravitational potential energy

  • The gravitational potential energy of an object is equal to the work done to lift it to that height

  • Gravitational potential energy = Weight x Height

  • Elastic potential energy is the energy associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched
