French Revolution - Before

• 3 Estates - only the Third Estate paid taxes

• France was in debt: extravagant spending, military spending, especially in the USA

• many peasants (in 3rd Estate) were stretched very thin

• King Louis XVI was an absolute monarch.

French Revolution - During

• wanted to bring equality - Slogan was "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity"

• tried to create a limited monarchy where the monarch - king or queen - would have reduced power

• created Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen - all are free and equal - free to speak, write and print opinions

• DEMOCRACY! no more estate system

French Revolution - After

• King and Queen try to escape to Austria

• turned their back on their people

• they are executed via guillotine

• Reign of Terror begins - Committee of Public Safety rules through terror
