Purpose
This task will give you the opportunity to express your understanding of the Essential Question, “What makes language powerful?” You will demonstrate what you have learned about argument writing as you reflect on what you have learned about language’s power to inspire, uplift, persuade, manipulate, and control.
3
Introduction
In this module we have read a wide variety of texts, including poems, speeches, advertisements, book reviews, and Animal Farm, to consider how language can be used to influence the behavior and thinking of others. Which use of language is most powerful? Is it when language is used to uplift and inspire others to think or act in positive ways? Or is it when it is used more negatively, to manipulate or control people?
4
Task
Write an argument essay about whether language is more powerful when it is used to uplift or whether it is more powerful when it is used to control.
5
What we will use for the EOM:
The speeches and the articles about their impact. (MLKJ, JFK)
The advertisements (Sales Pitches)
The book reviews (Animal Farm)
