Some Basics

Supines are verbal nouns.

Gerunds and Infinitives are also verbal nouns.

Supines are VERY defective

They exist in two forms of the 4th declension:


--> the accusative singular (-um)

--> the ablative singular (-ū)


They look like a 4th pp, so there will be a -t- or -s- immediately preceding the ending.

Expressing Purpose with the Supine

  • after verbs of motion (ire and venire, especially)

  • there are lots of different common supines in -um (cubitum, dormitum, sessum, venatum, rogatum, etc.)

  • look for a -tum or -sum word that doesn't agree with anything else (cf. gerunds)

Legatos ad Caesarem mittunt rogatum auxilium.


They send envoys to Caesar to ask/for the purpose of asking for help.


Stultitia est venatum ducere invitas canes.


It is folly to lead unwilling dogs to hunt/for the purpose of hunting.

Even rarer than in -um!

  • used with certain adjectives of value (mirabile, horribile, facile, difficile, and the nouns fas, nefas, and opus

  • expresses an abl. of respect/specification

  • mirabile visu! --> wonderful to see! (MV!)

  • fas est dictu --> this is the right thing to say

  • nihil dignum auditu --> nothing worthy of hearing/to hear
