'' Relative clause '' bir ismi tanımlayan yan cümleciktir. Yani, '' Hangi çocuk ? , Hangi adam ? , Hangi çanta ? '' sorularına cevap verir. Bir temel cümleye ( main clause ) bağlı olarak , tanımladığı isimden sonra gelir.

Emma : Do you see that girl ?

James : Which girl ?

Emma : I mean the girl who is wearing a black skirt.

Yukarıdaki diyalogta '' which girl? '' sorusuna ''the girl who is wearing a black skirt '' olarak cevap verilmiştir.
