History of the National Pledge of Allegiance!

  • U.S. Our national Pledge of Allegiance started in 1892. A minister named Francis Bellamy wrote a pledge that the citizens of any country could recite.

  • Here are the original words: I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

  • Then in 1923, some words were added and changed to:

  • "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

  • The pledge changed one more time in 1954, and this is the pledge that we say today. President Eisenhower wanted Congress to add two words. Read the pledge to see if you can find the two added words.
