What is a conjunction?

  • A subordinating conjunction joins two thoughts in one sentence.

  • We can remember subordinating conjunctions with this acronym SWABI

  • S - Since

  • W - When

  • A - After

  • B - Because

  • I - If

When do we use SWABI?

  • You use SWABI to connect 2 thoughts

  • Most of the time, you are connecting an incomplete thought (fragment) with a complete thought (a complete sentence)

  • Remember that a sentence requires a subject and a verb

  • Example: Tyler wasn't mad he lost his glasses. Had another pair.

  • Because he had another pair, Tyler wasn't mad he lost his glasses.

  • Tyler wasn't mad he lost his glasses because he had another pair.
