Dred Scott v. Sandford

  • Dred Scott was born a slave in Missouri and sold to an army doctor (Dr. Sandford)

  • While Scott was still a slave, the Dr. took him into Wisconsin (free territory) for about a year and then returned to Missouri.

  • When the Dr. died years later, Dred sued for his freedom.

Dred Scott v. Sandford

  • Scott said that because he was a slave in a free state, that he should have been granted his freedom.

  • The Supreme court ruled against Scott saying that because he was considered property, the government can not grant him freedom.

  • Slave owners were allowed to then take their slaves with them anywhere in the U.S.

  • The Supreme court ruled that Congress had no right to band slavery in any territory of the U.S.
