Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott was born a slave in Missouri and sold to an army doctor (Dr. Sandford)
While Scott was still a slave, the Dr. took him into Wisconsin (free territory) for about a year and then returned to Missouri.
When the Dr. died years later, Dred sued for his freedom.

Dred Scott v. Sandford
Scott said that because he was a slave in a free state, that he should have been granted his freedom.
The Supreme court ruled against Scott saying that because he was considered property, the government can not grant him freedom.
Slave owners were allowed to then take their slaves with them anywhere in the U.S.
The Supreme court ruled that Congress had no right to band slavery in any territory of the U.S.
