Let's Review

-The declaration of Independence ws signed and officially put into place

- We went over the advantages and disadvantages of both sides

- we discussed 3 amazing patriot woman; Molly Pitcher, Margaret Corbin, & Deborah Sampson

- the roughness of joining the continental army

- Free African Americans (5000) joined the cause

Native Americans

  • What we know = King George did not allow the colonists to settle on their land after the French and Indian war

  • WWK= The N.A's were angry that the colonists had taken their land to begin with

  • Early on in this war the N.A's tried not to take sides

  • But in 1777 the British had other ideas. They met with the leaders of the Iroquois tribe and joined forces.

  • Tribes that joined the British: Seneca, Cayuga, Mohawk, Onondaga

  • Why do you think the N.A's would join the side of the British?

5

Fighting style

  • Native American fighting style was totally different and George Washington took note of this.

  • Rather than stand in a line they would hide behind trees and such, attack, and disappear

SARATOGA

October 17, 1777

- The British planned to try to split apart the colonies they believed that the New England colonies were less loyal than the middle and southern colonies

- General Burgoyne traveled down from Canada cutting down trees to make roads.

-New York Militiamen attack "Indian style"

- Once Burgoyne reached Saratoga he was met by 6000 American soldiers

- After several days his only option was to surrender which means a WIN for the Americans!

9

This WIN was important!

  • The French saw this win as an opportunity to "pay back" the British for what happened in the last war

  • They became allies, helping the continental army to win freedom!

  • on February 1778 French soldiers and ships joined the fight!
