People long ago had questions about what caused things in
nature. In this lesson we are going to compare how different
tales from different cultures explain something that happens in
nature. We’ll also learn how the authors use vivid, or convincing,
details in the text and illustrations to describe thunder.

Which text tells the story about thunder best?
Why do you think so?

Which text tells the story about thunder best? Why do you think so?
Examples:
“Fool on the Hill” tells the story best because a wizard and
his daughter laughing and a fool and a tea kettle falling down
a hill would make a lot of noise, p. 44; I think “Mother of the
Mountains” tells the story best because I like the picture of the
old, wise spirit making storm clouds, p. 45; I think “I Am Boom!”
tells the story best because it has the words boom! boom!
boom! and that’s the sound that thunder makes, pp. 46–47.

How are the three texts alike and different?

How are the three texts alike and different?
The stories and poem
all explain why there is thunder; the explanations are all different and
imaginative, and the writers use very different details and characters in
their plots.

Compare & Contrast
I know that
both stories explain
what causes thunder. I’ll
write that in the Alike column. Now, what details does the Russian story use to explain the cause of thunder? The story says that thunder is caused by a wizard and his daughter laughing while the fool and tea kettle fall noisily down the hill. I’ll write, “Laughter and a noisy fall” in the Different column.
