Angela Burton sat on the porch trying the laces of her old, scuffed-up black-and-white sneakers.

She had left her new read sneakers in her bedroom closet.

Angela's mom sat down next to her. "Why are you wearing your old sneakers?"

"I misplaced my new ones." Angela said, shrugging. She was embarrassed to admit the truth to her mother. Everybody at Angela's new school seemed to be wearing black-and-while sneakers. The new sneakers could stay in their box for while.

Without pushing for more information, Angela's mother stood up and headed for the car. Angela grabbed her backpack and followed. A few minutes later, they arrived at Keystone Middle School. "It takes time to adjust to an new place," her mother said. "Just be yourself, and everything will fall into place."

On the way into school, Angela smiled at some girls from her class. They didn't seem to notice her. She wondered if she would ever adapt to this new school. A wave of loneliness flooded over Angela. She hoped it wouldn't take forever until she got used to the changes in her life.

Angela entered the fifth-grade classroom like the Invisible Girl. All of her classmates seemed to be talking together in pairs or groups. No one paid any attention to her. Angela sat at her desk, feeling awkward and self-conscious, until she thought of her mother's words, "Just be yourself."

Angela pulled a pad of drawing paper and some colored pencils from her backpack. Drawing, her favorite hobby, always seemed to relax her. As Angela began a picture of her cat, her worries melted away. After a few minutes, Mike and Lucy, two of Angela's classmates, came over to watch.

"You're a really good artist," Lucy said, studying Angela's picture with admiration. "

"My mom's an art teacher," Angela explained. "She showed me how."

"I wish I could draw like that," Lucy said with a touch of envy.

"I could show you a few tricks my mom taught me," Angela said, as Lucy and Mike pulled their chairs up to her desk.
