William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He was often called the English national poet and considered to be the greatest dramatist of all time. He is also called the Bard of Avon or Swan of Avon.

Shakespeare's Birthplace

  • Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England.

  • In 1847, the house where he was born was turned into a museum.

  • There is a visitor's book in the Birthplace, which everyone can sign. Over 25 million people have visited the Shakespeare's house.

  • The Bard wrote:

  • 154 sonnets (a special type of poem with 14 lines)

  • and some other poems

  • his works have been translated into every major language

Life of the Bard

  • When Shakespeare was 18, he married Anne Hathaway

  • They had three children

  • There are no direct descendants of his line today

The Globe Theatre

  • In 1599 the Globe Theatre was built on the banks of the River Thames in London

  • In this theatre, some of Shakespeare's plays were first performed

  • In 1613 it was destroyed by a fire

  • A modern reconstruction was built near the original site in 1997

  • Today you can go to the Globe to see the plays
