NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Defining relative clauses give us necessary information about the person or thing mentioned. 

1. He is the boy who /that works at the butcher's.

HANGİ OĞLAN ? : (O, kasapta çalışan oğlan

2. The girl whose father is a famous politican is a gifted pianist.

HANGİ KIZ ? : ( Babası ünlü bir politikacı olan kız yetenekli bir piyanist.)

3. The novel which/that she wrote is fantastic.

HANGİ ROMAN ? : ( Onun yazdığı roman harika.)

4. The restaurant where we had our dinner yesterday was extremely expensive.

HANGİ RESTORAN ? :( Dün akşam yemeğini yediğimiz restoran aşırı pahalıydı.)

5. I'll never forget the day when I first met Michael.

HANGİ GÜN ? :( Michael ile ilk kez buluştuğum günün asla unutmayacağım.)

Non-defining relative clauses give us extra information about someone or something. It isn't essential for understanding who or what we are talking about.

1. Jack, who's retired now, spends a lot of time with his grandchildren.

We use  the relative pronoun who, which, whose, when or where in non relative clauses.

But we can't use the relative pronoun that in non defining relative clause.

>> We also use commas before and after non defining relative clauses.

2. Mr. Smith , who is our next-door neighbor , complains a lot about my dog.

3. Switzerland , which is a very small country , has almost no social problems .
