Identifying topics and main ideas

• Every paragraph has a topic and a main idea

• Topic: one or two words. To identify the topic, ask "What is this paragraph about?"..... The topic repeats in the paragraph

• Main Idea: short sentence. To identify the main idea, ask "What is the most important idea in this paragraph?"

• The main idea is often the first sentence or last sentence in a paragraph
