EARTH'S ROTATION

10

Lesson objectives:

1. Describe the effects of Earth’s rotation.

2. Start developing a short documentary video relevant for this week’s lesson.

3. Identify ways on how to promote respect to each and everyone’s culture and tradition.

Multiple Choice

Question image

● Why does the sun rise at the east and set at the west?

1

Because of earth's rotation

2

Sun moves from east to west

12

The sun does not move from east to west

It's actually because of the earth's rotation.

● How does our planet rotate?

1

spins on its axis

2

orbits around the sun

3

Multiple Choice

Question image

How long does it take for the earth to complete one rotation?

1

1 day

2

365 1/4 days

16

1 Rotation period

= 1 day

Earth is tilted while spinning on its on axis.

The direction of rotation is from west to east or counterclockwise.

18

Multiple Choice

Question image

Why is the earth tilted?

1

The sun has a powerful gravity that keeps pulling the planet towards it.

2

It collided with a another proto-planet and in the process it was tilted.

19

Tilted Earth

The main consensus is that it has to do with Earth’s formation along with the rest of the planets in the Solar system.

It looks like it probably collided with a another proto-planet and in the process it was tilted.

What ways can you do to show respect to someone's culture and tradition?

33

Tides

Rotation causes tides, i.e. rise and fall of the sea level twice a day.

The moon's gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest from the moon. These bulges of water are high tides.

35

Shape of the Earth

The speed of the Earth’s rotation has affected the shape of the Earth. Because of the speed of rotation, a centrifugal force is created which leads to the flattening of the Earth at poles and bulging at the center.

What is earth's shape?

1

oblique spheroid

2

oblate spheroid

37

Wind system: Coriolis effect

When the earth rotates on its axis, wind cannot move in a straight line toward north and south from the equator.

A Coriolis force is generated. Under its influence, winds deflect to their right in the northern hemisphere and to their left in the southern hemisphere.

Movement of the stars

The stars appear to move very slowly because of the earth's rotation.
