Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • write the correct overall trend based on the graph shown

  • organize the data in graph in a logical and well-organized way

3

Overall trend

  • Describe the trend of the subject matter in the graph

  • Generally. look at the starting point and ending point for each variable (dynamic graph)

  • For static graph, report the most/the least/more/less

4

Example (Dynamic graph)

The graph depicts the rates of different travel modes used in Papua New Guinea from 1960 to 2010. From the graph, it is quite clear that there is an upward trend in the use of flights, as well as trains throughout the period surveyed.

5

Example (Dynamic graph)

The graph shows 3 students' monthly expenditure from January to April. Overall, it can be seen that both Atiqah's and Imran's expenditure decreased while Aisyah's expenditure increased throughout the period surveyed.

6

Example (Static graph)

The graph shows the number of club members in selected societies in IIUM. Overall, it can be seen that Video Gamers Guild had the highest number of members/IIUM Adventure Club had the most male members/IIUM Chess had the least members

Organizing data

Between 1960 and 1970, the percentage of trains used annually remained relatively steady at just below 10%. It then rose slightly over the next 15 years to 10% in 1985. Then, the rate continued to grow sharply from 1985 to 1995, and then at a slower rate over the next 15 years until it reached at almost 40% in 2010.

On the other hand, the rate of people who travelled using flights doubled during the same period from slightly below 10% in 1960 to around 20% by 1985. Then, the figure rocketed to the highest peak of 80% before it slumped to less than 70% by 2010.

Question image

How is the data organized?

According to the given data, initially more than 25 million people used John F. Kennedy Airport while 35 million people used the LaGuardia Airport and this airport had the largest number of travelers in 1995. Newark Airport, in this year, recorded about 15 million passengers and this was the least among the three given airports. After a year, the passenger numbers in all the three airports increased and their popularity and trend in the amount of visitors remained almost the same as it was in the previous year. John F. Kennedy Airport had the highest number of passengers in 1997 while LaGuardia managed to receive the highest number of air passengers for the next 3 years.

How is the data organized?

Looking at the detail, the number of travelers at John F. Kennedy Airport started at 26 million in 1995, and then increased remarkably to reach the highest point of 47 million in 1997. In 1999, the figure dipped to 32 million. At the last year, there was a slight growth to 44 million. On the other hand, LaGuardia began at 35 million in 1995, after that it rose remarkably for the next three years, at 46 million. In 2000, LaGuardia hit the peak point at 68 million travelers. However, if we look at Newark Airport, it started at the lowest point of 16 million passengers in the first year. After this point, the trend increased significantly to 42 million in 1998. In the last two years it remained stable at 42 million travelers.
