Simple Sentences have 2 parts:

  • Subject (Noun) - Example: My dog

  • Predicate (Verb+) - Example: Runs

Simple Sentence

  • My dog runs.

  • Make it better ---> My tiny, ugly dog awkwardly runs to catch cats.

Compound Sentences have 3 parts:

  • Simple sentence (Independent Clause)

  • Conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

  • Simple sentence (Independent Clause)

  • Example: She likes horses, and he likes snakes.

Compound Sentence

  • My dog runs but my cat climbs

  • Make it better ---> My tiny, ugly dog awkwardly runs to catch the cat, but my smart, sneaky cat stealthily climbs up the tree.

Complex Sentences have 3 parts:

  • 1. Simple sentence (Independent Clause): This makes sense by itself.

  • 2. Subordinating conjunction: if, since, as, when, although, while, after, before, until, because. "I SAW A WABUB"

  • 3. Subordinating clause (Dependent Clause): This does NOT makes sense on its own

  • Example: My dog likes to run until it's dinner time

  • My dog could catch the cat if he was sneakier.

  • Make it better: My gargantuan, ugly dog could possibly catch my crazy, black cat if he was sneakier.

  • YOU CAN SWITCH IT!!!

  • If her was sneakier, my gargantuan, ugly dog could possibly catch my crazy, black cat.
