What Are Conjunctions?

Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together.

Function of conjunctions:

Conjunctions allow you to form complex, elegant sentences and avoid the use of multiple sentences which feel choppy:


I like pizza. I like rice. I don't like meat.

I like pizza and rice, but I don't like meat.


I was tired. I went home.

I was tired, so I went home.

Common conjunctions

The most common coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.

Usage of for

For is used to express "the reason of something". It is similar to the use of because.


I want to stay home for I need to read the book.

Usage of and

"And" is used to add information.


He is professional and responsible.

Usage of nor

Used to express an additional negative idea "and not"


He doesn't like German movies nor do my friends like them


He doesn't dance in the traditional way nor does he want to.

Usage of but

Used to express a contradiction


I wanted to go home, but she asked my to stay

Usage of or

Used to give one of two options, an alternative

Used to express an outcome ins spite of the situation. Similar to "aún así" in Spanish.


He tried to scape the room yet he failed

Used to add a result if something
