Climate of the Midwest Region

The Midwest is located far from the oceans, so winds off the oceans don’t make it to this part of the country. However, strong winds blow from the north and the south.

In the summer, the warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico causes hot, rainy weather. In the winter, cold air moves down from Canada, causing snowstorms.

The Great Lakes affect the areas around them. In the winter, cold winds pick up moisture off the surface of the Great Lakes and cause heavy snowfall in the areas around them. This is called “lake effect” snow.

Severe Weather in the Midwest Region

In the spring and summer, tornadoes a tornado in the are common in the Midwest. They are caused when masses of warm and cold air meet over the flat land. Tornadoes move over land quickly, often destroying everything in their paths.

Droughts, periods of little or no rain, are also a danger in the Midwest. One of the worst droughts in the Midwest happened in the 1930s. The drought caused the soil to dry up and blow away.
