ARUNIMA SINHA

Force Of Nature

Arunima was a national -level volleyball player. When she was 23 years old, she was attacked by robbers on a train. Arunima tried to fight them off but they threw her out of coach. She suffered terrible injuries and her left leg had to be amputated. It was an awful thing to happen, especiaally to someone who loved sports.

But Arunima refused to give up on life. While still in the hospital, she asked herself, 'What would be the most difficult thing to do right now?' And that's when she had an idea! She would climb Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, with one artificial leg and a metal rod in the other!

After a year of training, Arunima faced the mountain. The climb was doubly difficult for her. Her artificial leg slipped on the several times, and the strain made her leg bleed. ' Many times , the prosthetic leg just came off on the mountain and I fell , ' remembers Arunima. But with her eye on the summit, she kept going. When she was just a few hours away from the peak, she realized that her oxygen cylinder was running out ! 'go back!' insisted the team leader but Arunima refused. 'I had to hoist the Indian flag on the top,' she said. After climbing for 52 days. She finally reached the peak. Arunima hoisted the national flag in the snow and became the first female amputee in the world to climb Mount Everest!
