You will learn how to solve for x in this lesson.

What does it mean to "solve for x"?

When you solve for x, you are trying to figure out what x (or any other variable) in an equation stands for.

As an example:

In x + 7 = 9, you'd have to figure out what plus 7 equals 9.

Some equations, like the previous example, are very simple.

However, don't get used to solving easy problems because they will become much more difficult!

WORDS YOU SHOULD KNOW

• Variable: A letter used as a placeholder for a number in an equation or expression

• Reciprocal: A fraction's reciprocal is where the numerator has switched places with the denominator. Example: 2/3's reciprocal is 3/2

SOLVE FOR X

First, I will take you through addition

EQUATION: 4 + x = 12

1. Subtract 4 from both sides

4 - 4 = 0, 12 - 4 = 8

2. That's it.

The answer would be x = 8!

Now let's try subraction!

Equation: x - 8 = 9

1. Add 8 to both sides

-8 + 8 = 0, 9 + 8 = 17

2. That's it.

The answer would be x = 17!

Now multiplication...

EQUATION: 4x = 16

1. Divide 4 from both sides

4/4 = 1, 16/4 = 4

2. Simplify

1x = x

3. That's it.

The answer is x = 4!

Division Part One

4/x = 2

1. Divide

4/4 = 1, 4/2 = 2

2. Simplify

1x = x

The answer would be x = 2!

Division Part Two

EQUATION: x/4 = 6

1. Multiply

4 * 6 = 24

2. That's it.

The answer would be x = 24!
