2

Learning Intentions

  • I can classify matter (element, compound, heterogeneous mixture, and homogeneous mixture) and justify my answer with an explanation using scientific language

3

Matter

  • Matter is anything that has a mass and takes up space

  • Mass is the amount of matter that an object has

  • Volume is the amount of space that an object fills.

5

Matter

  • All matter can be classified as either a pure substance or a mixture

Slide image

6

Pure Substance

  • A pure substance is matter that contains only one type of particle

  • Example: copper wire is made from only copper particles.

7

Pure Substance

Pure substance can be further classified as elements or compounds

Slide image

8

Element

  • An element is a pure substance that can’t be changed into anything simpler

  • Today we know there are at least 116 elements.

  • Examples: copper & gold.

9

Compound

  • A compound is a pure substance that consists of two or more elements

  • Compounds have only one kind of particle, but each particle consists of two or more elements.

  • Example: water

Slide image

10

Mixture

  • A mixture contains two or more pure substances.

  • Example: table salt dissolved in water or iron mixed with sulfur.

Slide image

11

Mixture

  • A mixture is formed when two or more pure substance are put together

  • Example: Fertilizer

12

Heterogeneuos Mixture

  • A heterogeneous mixture is not uniform in its composition

  • The particles can be visibly distinguished in large visible clumps

  • Example: oil and water, cement

13

Homogeneous Mixture

  • A homogeneous mixture is made of substances that are evenly and microscopically mixed together

  • Example: soda pop, the air we breathe, alloys
