Conclusions

• Sometimes authors do not give all the details in the story.

• Readers must find clues in the words and pictures and think about what they already know to make a smart guess about what the author does not tell.

• A smart guess is called a conclusion.

• Often, people say that when you are making a smart guess, you are drawing a conclusion.

Infer/Predict Strategy

• Use clues to figure out what the author does not tell you. This is called making an inference.

• Look for clues like these: what characters say, what characters do, events, setting, mportant ideas, pictures, and what you know

• Use clues to guess what will happen next.

• This is called making a prediction.

Use a graphic organizer.

Use the inference map to show the clues that made you come up with your conclusion.
