Converting Decimals to Fractions

To convert a terminating decimal to a fraction, say it out loud, and write down what you hear.

To convert a repeating decimal to a fraction, say it out loud, but subtract 1 from the denominator.

(Unless it's one of those common ones like 1/3, 2/3, etc)

Converting Between Fractions, Decimals, and Percents.

How are percents used in our daily lives?

• We use percentages to find the sale price and discount or markdowns on clothing in the store.

• Sales tax, tip or gratuity, and markups

• Bank interest rates.

You can write a percent as an equivalent fraction or as an equivalent decimal.

Write Fractions as Decimals and Percents

• Writing an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. This method is useful when the fraction has a denominator that is a factor or a multiple of 100. 

• Use long division. This method is useful if a fraction does not have a denominator that is a factor or multiple of 100.

Converting percent to equivalent decimal

• Move two decimal places to the left when converting from percent to decimal.

• Move two decimal places to the right when converting from decimal to percent.

Greg spends 45% of his budget on rent for his apartment. Write this percent as a fraction in simplest form and as a decimal.

• 1.  Write the percent as a fraction in simplest form.

Steps to convert a fraction to decimal to precent

• Divide the numerator by the denominator EX: 1/8 ... 1 divided by 8

• Continue dividing until you have 3 decimal places or the remainder is 0

• Move the decimal 2 places to the right to convert to a percent
