This lesson will help you get a basic understanding of the game chess

The king

  • The king is the most important piece for if it is taken then the side who lost their king has lost the game.

  • The king can move in 8 directions, 4 ways diagonally, 2 ways vertical, and 2 ways horizontally but it can only move one over each turn.

The pawn

  • The pawn can move up 2 squares if it hasn't moved from it original position.

  • The pawn can not take pieces that are in front of it but rather takes diagonally.

  • The pawn if gets to the other side of the board can become any piece except the king.

The knight

  • The knight is in the middle.

  • The knight can move one up and two over in each direction, and also two up and one over in each direction.

The bishop

  • The bishop moves diagonally in 4 directions.

  • There is two bishops there is a light square bishop that stays on the light squares and a dark square bishop that stays on the dark squares.
