Buddy Holly did not want to ride their old tour bus that continued to break down. He decided to charter a plane to take them to their next destination. He offered Jiles Richardson a seat since he was sick, and Ritchie Valens won a coin toss for another seat.

Shortly after the plane took off, it crashed. There were no survivors.
