PROTECTION FROM ENEMIES
Plants have various specific characteristics to protect themselves from enemies to ensure the survival of their species.
3
SHARP THORNS
Thorns appear to protect the plant against herbivores. These sharp thorns can hurt the enemies that want to eat them.
4
PRODUCE LATEX
Latex has one function, and that is as a defense against mammal and insect predators. Because of their bitterness, plants with latex in their sap are generally left alone by grazing animals. Plant-eating insects, scare off both by the toxicity and the stickiness of latex, which can immobilize them until they die.
5
FINE HAIRS
One of their most common defenses is to guard their leaves and stems with layers of fine hairs. The fine hairs on the plant might be located on the stems, leaves , or branches. These hairs irritate our skin and causing itchiness. The hairs are usually thin and light-colored, which makes it hard to pull them out of our skin. Plants have fine hairs to keep herbivores or people away or to make their leaves or stems unappetizing to eat.
6
POISONOUS
Plants cannot move to escape their predators, so they must have other means of protecting themselves from herbivorous animals.
Poisonous plants are plants that produce toxins that deter herbivores from consuming them.
7
PRODUCING BAD SMELL / RELEASING STENCH
Plants that emit bad smells is to repel animals.
This might be the best plant to deter bugs. Ants, Japanese beetles, roaches, bed bugs, spider mites, silverfish, and ticks will stay away if you have some of these around. Some bug repellents use an ingredient in this flower because of how effective it is.
8
BAD TASTE
One way to keep from being eaten is to taste bad. Many plants use chemicals to give them a bitter taste. If a better tasting plant is nearby, then the animal will move on.
