Light on Skin L2.4

Objective: KWBAT explain the harmful effect of light on the skin.

Phenomenon: Australis has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Why?

media

3

Open Ended

Question: Why can light from the sun cause skin cancer but light from a light bulb cannot cause skin cancer?

CFS: Explains the difference between sunlight and light from a light bulb.

Explains what happens when light from the sun hits genetic material.

Explains what happens when light from a light bulb hits genetic material.

TALK ABOUT ALL OF THE ABOVE POINTS TO RECEIVE CREDIT.

4

Light from the sun and light from a light bulb are different. Light from the sun has ultraviolet light in it and light from a light bulb does not. Genetic material absorbs ultraviolet light and this causes damage to the genetic material. Light from a light bulb is not absorbed by the genetic material and therefore cannot make a change to the genetic material.

Multiple Choice

Oscar uses some glue to fix a broken plate. He puts the glue under a desk lamp but the glue doesn’t dry. Then he puts the glue out in the sun and it dries. Why does light from the sun dry the glue when light from the desk lamp does not?

1

Because the glue can take in energy from the light from the sun but not from the light from the lamp.

2

Because light from the sun pulls energy out of the glue and light from the desk lamp does not

3

Because the sun gives off a type of light that carries energy, and light from the desk lamp does not

4

Because light from the sun carries heat molecules, and light from the desk lamp does not.

7

Multiple Choice

How could you tell when energy was absorbed?

1

you could not tell

2

you could tell because the light changed direction

3

you could tell because the object changed

4

you could tell because the energy that went in is not the same energy that went out.
