Mean

To calculate the mean average of this data set:

5, 7, 8, 2, 1

We would start by adding up all the pieces of data:

5 + 7 + 8 + 2 + 1 = 23

Then, we divide by how many pieces of data there are.

We have 5 pieces of data.

23 ÷ 5 = 4.6

The mean average is 4.6

The Range

Find the range in this set of data:

3, 5, 7, 9, 2, 6

It helps to put the numbers in order of size first, starting with the smallest:

2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9

Now, select the highest and lowest numbers and find the difference between them.

9 − 2 = 7

The range is 7

22

The Range (negative numbers in a set)

The set of data may contain negative numbers too:

5, −3, 4, 2, −1, 8

Order from the smallest:

−3, −1, 2, 4, 5, 8

Subtract the smallest number from the highest:

Remember, two minus signs next to each other make a plus.

8 − −3 = 8 + 3 = 11

You can use a vertical number line to help you with negative numbers task.
