What happens during the baby’s first cry?
Inside the womb, the lungs are not functional; it is filled with amniotic fluid. As soon as the baby comes out, the lungs needs to be kick started for it to live. This happens due to an adrenalin rush – more intense than what we experience during a heart attack! This surge of adrenalin fills the blood stream. The muscles we need to breathe suddenly go into a spasm and the lungs flutter into life and helps the baby draw its first breath.

Why do we always wrap a newborn baby?
The hypothalamus, which is responsible for temperature control, is not fully developed in newborn. Hence, the difference in body temperature is a shock to the system. To balance this out, babies have a layer of brown fat, which generates heat to keep them warm. We also wrap and cover babies to protect them from experiencing this shock, as the temperature in the womb is warmer than the outside.

The Sense of Smell
A baby's nose starts to form early in the first trimester of pregnancy. Two tiny nostrils appear just a few weeks later.
By 10 weeks, the receptors that a baby will use to detect smells have already formed.

Multiple Choice
Sound waves make the ear drum vibrate. This causes tiny bones to amplify the sound to what structure?

18
The Sense of Hearing
Newborn babies can hear fairly well, but not perfectly. The middle ear of a newborn is full of fluid and this impairs hearing to a small extent.
Additionally, the entire hearing apparatus is somewhat immature. That's why newborn babies respond best to high-pitched, exaggerated sounds and voices. Because they learn it in the womb, newborns are born with the ability to distinguish their mother's voice and respond to it above all others.

The Sense of Taste
Newborns have around 2x more taste buds than adults and so are very sensitive. Combined with their sharp sense of smell, they can smell which way to turn to be fed.
By three months of age, babies love exploring the world by squeezing everything they can into their mouth. At this stage, they are trying to explore different tastes and textures by chewing on their fingers and toys. Exploring textures through mouth generally fades away around the first birthday.
