U10 W2 READING QUIZ

In 1922, Elis Stenman decided to build a house. He would make
it out of newspapers. That may sound odd, but Elis was smart and creative. He once invented a machine that made paper clips. Elis believed he could build a paper house. He always finished his projects.
Elis and his family went to work. They used more than 100,000 pieces of newspaper to finish the house. Elis lived happily in his
house of paper. His family moved out around 1930. The house was later turned into a museum. How did Elis do it? First, he built the house frame with wood. Then, he pasted newspapers together to make the walls. Each
wall was 215 layers thick! Last, he covered the outside walls with varnish. Varnish is a clear, sticky liquid that dries like paint. It is
often used to waterproof wooden boats.

Elis also made furniture out of paper logs. To make the logs, Elis
tightly wound several layers of newspaper. Then he sealed each
log with varnish so it would not unroll. After the logs dried, Elis cut
them into different lengths. Then he nailed the logs together to
make furniture. Today, the paper house is still standing. Many people visit
Elis’s Paper House every year in Rockport, Massachusetts. They
are amazed that old papers could transform into a house with
furniture. Elis Stenman proved that it could be done.
