Earlier people believed that the Earth was flat like a plate. They thought that if they reached the end of the Earth , they may fall of it ! The idea that the Earth is round was first suggested by Pythagoras , a Greek thinker in the 6th century BCE. we see a small portion of the the Earth . Hence it appears flat to us. Earth ' s shape is called geoid.

Globe
A globe is a small model of the Earth. the word ' globe ' comes from the Latin word globus , which means round mass or sphere. A globe is used to locate places on the Earth.

Poles and axis
The topmost point on the surface of the Earth is called the North pole and the bottommost point on the surface is called South pole.
The imaginary line the passes through the center of the Earth connecting the North and the South poles , is called Earth's axis. The Earth rotates on its own axis. Earth is tilted to one side [ because its axis is tilted ].
