• Earlier people believed that the Earth was flat like a plate. They thought that if they reached the end of the Earth , they may fall of it ! The idea that the Earth is round was first suggested by Pythagoras , a Greek thinker in the 6th century BCE. we see a small portion of the the Earth . Hence it appears flat to us. Earth ' s shape is called geoid.

Globe

• A globe is a small model of the Earth. the word ' globe ' comes from the Latin word globus , which means round mass or sphere. A globe is used to locate places on the Earth.

Poles and axis

• The topmost point on the surface of the Earth is called the North pole and the bottommost point on the surface is called South pole.

• The imaginary line the passes through the center of the Earth connecting the North and the South poles , is called Earth's axis. The Earth rotates on its own axis. Earth is tilted to one side [ because its axis is tilted ].
