  • In the early years of Victoria's reign almost no poor children went to school and laws such as the 1844 Factory Act were made to improve education for poor children

  • There were different type of schools for poor children such as :


  • (a)- Dame School - were set up by women who were most likely themselves poor and were more similar to babysitters than teachers.

  • (b)- Ragged schools- were set up to provide free basic education to orphans and very poor children.They were run by churches and often had a foundation of charity and religion


  • (c)-Factory school-Classes were held in factories during working hours


  • (d)-National school-Churches which used one teacher and lots of monitors(older students) to teach hundreds of children at a time

1870-Education For all

  • The Education Act of 1870 stated that all children between the ages of 5 and 13 were supposed to go to school but they'd still have to pay a small amount of money.

  • In 1881 it became compulsory for all children to go to school which meant that the government had to make it free.
