PARAPHRASING TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

 

Proper citation can be tricky. Even with the very best intentions, if citations are done incorrectly, it is possible to plagiarize. Everyone knows (or should know) that copying-and-pasting is never allowed. However, other, more subtle forms of plagiarism are often difficult to spot. 

What is paraphrasing?

According to Na, C. D., & Nhat Chi Mai "[p]araphrasing is an important skill in academic writing it is a cognitive skill that requires higher order thinking and high proficiency inss both reading, and writing." (p. 9).

Strategies for paraphrasing

• Replace the words or phrases with synonyms

• Change the order of some words or phrases

• Use indirect speech. E.g. According to..., X author states that..., etc.

Remember...

When paraphrasing you have to use your own words without changing the original idea. If you use the same words (and you don´t include quotation marks " "), you are PLAGIARIZING.

In this example, it is used indirect speech for paraphrasing.

Another example:

Paraphrased idea: In Japan, people now get married at age 30 whereas in 1970, the average age was 25.

In this example, it is changed the order of words or phrases and there are used synonyms.
