Adjectives: Order in a sentence

A sentence can have more than 1 adjectives.

So how do we arrange the order of adjectives in a sentence?

For now, we are only going to focus on Opinion, Size, Age and Colour. So the order is like this:

1. Opinion - beautiful, lovely, ugly ...

2. Size - big, small, tall, long, short ...

3. Age - old, new ...

4. Colour - pink, yellow, blue ...

Look at these sentences. Refer to the colour and observe which adjectives comes first.

a) A beautiful (1) long (2) dress. {beautiful is opinion and long is size}

b) A big (2) old (3) yellow (4) umbrella. {big is size, old is age and yellow is colour}

Remember the order.

1. Opinion - beautiful, lovely, ugly ...

2. Size - big, small, tall, long, short ...

3. Age - old, new ...

4. Colour - pink, yellow, blue ...

c. A long (2) blue (4) tie.

{long is size and blue is colour}

d. An ugly (1) purple (4) monster.

{ugly is age and purple is colour}

e. A big (2) green (4) ball.

{big is size and green is colour}

A beautiful tall building.
