6

Most objects don't emit light of their own, so how do we see them?

We can only see objects like these in the presence of a light source.

media

7

Light from a light source can bounce of an object and enter our eyes. This bouncing of light off a surface is called reflection.

Light still travels in straight lines when it is reflected.

8

The reflection of light allows the girl to see the flower.

9

Multiple Select

Which objects would be able to see in a room that is completely dark?

1

a white ball

2

a black ball

3

a red ball

4

none of the objects

Fill in the Blanks

Type answer...

11

When water is very still, we can see very clear images due to the reflection of light

media

12

Try this out

Turn off your phone screen, and look at the reflection of your face

13

Look again, but this time take note of:

  • The size of the image

  • The orientation of the image (upright? upside down? left to right?)

14

Your screen acts as a plane mirror

- a mirror with a flat surface.

15

In Scientific terms,

Your actual face is called an object, while the face in the mirror is called an image.

media

16

The image of your face in the mirror was:

  • the same size as the object (your actual face)

  • upright

  • laterally inverted

  • virtual

  • as far from the mirror as you were from the mirror

17

Lateral inversion

When the person raises his right hand, it seems like the image raises its left hand.

media

18

Images can be real or virtual.

A virtual image is only formed in the mirror, and not formed on a screen. A real image, however, can be formed on a screen.

19

If you happen to have a concave mirror lying around you can make real images appear on a screen.

media

20

You can also buy these mirascopes online to play with real images.

(video on next slide)

21

22

The distance between the object and the mirror (a) is equal to the distance between the image and the mirror (b).

media

23

One more time: images in plane mirrors are:

  • the same size as the object

  • upright

  • laterally inverted

  • virtual

  • as far from the mirror as the object is from the mirror

24

Let's see how much you understood.

Yay more quiz questions :D

25

Have you noticed that ambulances seem to have printed the word 'ambulance' wrongly?

media

26

It's not an error.

It's actually because the word will look correct when reflected in a plane mirror.
