Properties of addition

  • There are 3 properties of addition

  • 1. Order property of addition

  • 2. Grouping property of addition

  • 3. 0 property of addition

4

1. Order property of addition

If you change the order of the addends , the sum is the same. For example :- Let us add 217 and 132 , we get 349. Now add 132 and 217 , we again get 349. This is the order property of addition.

Checkpoint 1

Let's revise what you have just learned

6

Multiple Choice

Which expression does NOT follow the order property of addition.

1

41+74=74+41

2

144+77=77+144

3

715+1=716

4

44+74=74+44

Multiple Select

Choose those expressions which follow the order property of addition.

1

455+44=44+455

2

477+0=477

3

487+44=44+487

4

965+1=966

2. Grouping property of addition

If you want to add 3 numbers. Suppose 253 , 322 and 173. You can add 255 and 322 first, which gives you 577. Now add 577 and 173, you get 750. You can also add 322 and 173 first to get 495. Then add 255 and 495 to get 750. So, if you add 3 numbers in either the 2 ways. The answer is the same.

Checkpoint 2

Let's revise more what we have learned now

11

Multiple Choice

Which expression follows the grouping property of addition

1

[410+111]+13=410+[111+13]

2

411+111=111+411

12

3. 0 Property of addition

If we keep 1 addend as 0, we get the same non-zero addend as the sum. For example 433+0=433 and 0+688=688
