South Asia Monsoons
Much of South Asia depends on monsoon winds for water.
Winter= dry
Summer= Wet
4

6
The Himalayas
The Himalayas are the tallest mountain range in the world.
They keep the wet summer monsoon rains from entering southwestern China.
Throughout history, they have also kept the Indian subcontinent separated from the rest of Asia.
7
The Deserts of East Asia
The Gobi Desert and Taklamakan Desert are both "rain shadow deserts."
They are created because the Himalayas block necessary rainfall.

Three Gorges Dam
The Chinese has built dams throughout the country to control their water sources.
The largest dam is the Three Gorges Dam.
The Three Gorges Dam helps to control flooding and river traffic as well as create hydroelectric power.
One downside to building these large dams is that it destroys habitats upstream.

Ring of Fire
East and Southeast Asia are located along the Ring of Fire.
The Ring of Fire causes earthquakes and volcanic activity along the eastern portion of the Asian continent.
12

Population Issues
Asia's population has grown greatly over the last several decades.
China and India's population is over 1 billion in each country!
20

China's Population Pyramid
In order to control their population, China implemented the "One Child Policy."
Effects:
Decreased population (less working population)
Fewer females than males (Chinese culture places more importance on males)

Government
Many Asian countries are democratic, but there are a few that have close ties with communism.
North Korea, China, Laos, Vietnam

Immigration laws that prevented new citizens from migrating to China
27
Multiple Choice
India has not implemented laws to control family sizes, unlike China. How will that impact the future population in India?
India will have more females than males.
China's population will be higher than India's population.
India will continue to see population growth while China's population will level off and begin to decrease.
India's economic growth will surpass China's.
28
Multiple Choice

Americans prefer to help countries that are less fortunate.
America does not have the production capabilities and needs the other countries to produce materials.
