Ibn Battuta

From: “Travels in Asia and Africa” ca. 1325-1354

Ibn Battuta (1304-1368) was a Muslim explorer from Tangier, Morocco. At the age of twenty-one, he left home to make the traditional Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, a journey that sparked his lifelong interest in travel. Ibn Battuta became an explorer and spent more than three decades visiting much of the Islamic world, as well as India, East Asia, and parts of Europe, which he recorded extensively. Below are his experience of the east coast of Africa, his descriptions of the trip across the Sahara desert, and his thoughts on the Kingdom of Mali.

Ibn Battuta sails along the East Coast of Africa

I took ship at Aden, and after four days at sea reached Zayla [Zeila, on the African coast], the town of the Berberah, who are a coloured people. Their land is a desert extending (stretching) for two months' journey from Zayla to Maqdashaw. Zayla is a large city with a great bazaar (market), but it is the dirtiest, most abominable(awful), and most stinking town in the world. The reason for the stench is the quantity of its fish and the blood of the camels. When we got there, we chose to spend the night at sea, in spite of its extreme roughness, rather than in the town, because of its filth.
