An Oversimplification of the Play...

  • Bassanio needed money to marry Portia, a wealthy and smart lady.

  • Bassanio borrowed money from Antonio, who also didn't have any money.

  • Antonio borrowed money from Shylock, a Jew, who demanded a pound of flesh from Antonio if he couldn't repay his debt.

  • Antonio defaulted. Shylock went into the court to demand a pound of flesh from Antonio.

  • Portia, now Bassanio's wife, came to Antonio's rescue. Could she save Antonio's life?

7

Before that, we need to know why Shylock insisted to demand a pound of flesh if Antonio couldn't pay back his debt.

Poll

Revenge: getting back at someone for the evil he has done

If you were Shylock, and Antonio made fun of you, would you seek revenge against Antonio?

Yes! He must pay for his sins of making fun of me!

Nah I will just prove how wrong it is to make fun of me instead of seeking revenge.

I can't be bothered man. I don't care if he made fun of me.

11

Shylock hated Antonio so much. He wouldn't even take 6,000 Ducats from Bassanio as repayment of his debt. Not even Portia's speech about mercy can change his mind.

He showed no mercy for Antonio. He demanded "justice".
