The difference between pragmatic and DA

Pragmatic

linguistic pragmatics is an extension of semantics and propositional logic. It studies the meaning of utterances (words, phrases and sentences used for communication) and tries to define the rules that govern their interpretation.

For example, how uttering the sentence “It’s hot in here.” is interpreted not just as a factual statement but as a request to open the window

Discourse Analysis (DA)

•Discourse analysis studies meaning too but focuses on larger scale units (articles, conversations, and their overall interpretation in a specific communicative context, e.g. how a writer or speaker uses words, grammatical structures, intonation, to construe a reality and persuade the reader or listener. It looks at the participants’ intentions, their background knowledge, the spatial and temporal setting, the preceding and surrounding texts, etc.

The different

Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis involve the study of language in its contexts of use. Pragmatics focuses on the effects of context on meaning, and Discourse Analysis studies written and spoken language in relation to its social context.
