George Floyd Justice in Policing Act: a federal (national) law that has passed the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., but has NOT passed the Senate. President Biden wants the law to pass the Senate, so then he can sign it.

1
2

It's not law yet. It has support of 2/3 of the government bodies it needs to become law:

3

The House passed the bill. The President says he'll sign it. What's the problem? The Justice In Policing Act has not passed the Senate.

4

The Republicans in the US Senate have proposed the "Justice Act", not the "Justice in Policing Act". The 50 Republican Senators will not vote for the Justice in Policing Act. It will NOT become law.

Jim Crow LAWS

Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that stopped Black people from being equal to Whites. These laws were enacted from 1877-1963 in white Southern states to stop progress made by Black people during the Reconstruction period. Jim Crow laws were enforced until 1965. (You will study this next year is US History).

Why does Minnesota suffer through some of the worst racial disparities in the nation?

One answer is the spread of racist, restrictive real estate covenants in the early 20th century. Jim Crow of the North charts the progression of racist policies and practices from the advent of restrictive covenants (rules in house contracts) after the turn of the last century to their final elimination in the late 1960s. This video is on the last slide. It's an hour long.

The video on the last slide explains in AMAZING detail how BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People Of Color), but ESPECIALLY Black people, were hurt BY LAW. The unequal treatment was the LAW at that time. THIS IS SYSTEMIC RACISM that has a massive impact on Minnesota today, the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd.
