The American Revolution
The Revolutionary War (1775-83), also known as the American Revolution, was a result of growing tensions between residents of Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, Great Britain.

What was France's involvement?
France entered the American Revolution on the side of America. As an Ally.
What did they have in common? They were both tired of the taxation system and found it highly unfair.

Key Vocabulary
Revolution = America overthrew Great Britain in favor of independence in a new system.
Allies = A state formally cooperating with another for a military or other purpose.
Uprising = an act of resistance or rebellion; a revolt
Revolt = violent action against an established government or ruler

Causes
The French and Indian war: left Britain in a serious debt, and they turned to the colonists to pay more taxes to service this debt.
Boston Massacre: In 1770 tensions came to a head when British troops fired into an unruly crowd and killed five civilians. This event outraged the colonists. It became known as the Boston Massacre.

The Emancipation Proclamation
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
The Proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
Consequently, the American civil war was fought due to sectional differences over slavery.
