Today I'll be teaching you how to multiply a whole number by a fraction for fifth grade math. Starting with the basics I will walk you through all the steps.

The basics

So lets start with a basic equation, how about.. 1/2 x 2. First to set up the problem we will write down the 1/2 as 1 over 2. Then put a multiplecation sign, and last put the two, and under the two, put a 1 to make it a fraction but for it to still be a whole. Now just multiply across. So 1 x 2 is 2. then for the bottom number, we do 1 x 2 again and we have the answer of 2/2. Now if we turned 2/2 into a mixed number, we get 1 whole. So that will be our answer.

So, the steps to multiply a whole number by a fraction, is to set it up, take the fraction and put a multiplecation sign, the the whole number turning it into a fraction. And simply multiply across and simply/turn it into a mixed number.

Answers and explaination

1/2 x 2/1 = 2/2 which would turn into 1 whole

5/6 x 3/1 = 15/6 which would be 2 1/2

9/1 x 10/12 = 90/12 which would be 7 1/2
