  • The Victorian period was seen as a significant period in the development of Britain and new inventions formed a key part of this.

  • People were better educated-many people could read and write

  • Transport had greatly been developed through the introduction of the train and it became easier for Victorians to move from one place to another

  • Electricity and gas were used for lighting houses instead of candles

  • Industrial and scientific revolution led to the development of machines thus factories could be faster and more efficient.

  • Communication was greatly developed through the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell

  • Letters could be dropped into postboxes and delivered around the world-the stamp was invented in 1840.

  • There were less diseases as sewers were built to carry away the waste from flushing toilets.

  • By 1901 many people had moved from the countryside to the cities and towns to find work in factories shops and offices

  • Other notable inventions during the Victorian period are such as the rubber tyres, the invention of the camera and the conversion of iron into steel
