DATA HANDLING

Data handling refers to the process of gathering, recording and presenting information in a way that is helpful to others - for instance, in graphs or charts. Data handling is also sometimes known as statistics and you will often come across it in the study of both Maths and Science.

3

RAW DATA

Raw data, also known as primary data, are data (e.g., numbers, instrument readings, figures, etc.) collected from a source. In the context of examinations, the raw data might be described as a raw score.

4

STATISTICS

Statistics is a branch of applied mathematics that involves the collection, description, analysis, and inference of conclusions from quantitative data. The mathematical theories behind statistics rely heavily on differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory. Statisticians, people who do statistics, are particularly concerned with determining how to draw reliable conclusions about large groups and general phenomena from the observable characteristics of small samples that represent only a small portion of the large group or a limited number of instances of a general phenomenon.

5

IN SIMPLE WORDS IF WE SAY STATISTICS IS A

A branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data or a collection of quantitative data.

6

RANGE

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN  THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST  OBSERVATIONS  GIVES US AN IDEA  OF THE SPREAD  OF OBSERVATIONS . THIS CAN BE FOUND  BY SUBTRACTING THE  LOWEST  OBSERVATIONS FROM  THE HIGHEST  OBSERVATIONS .

7

MODE

The mode of a data set is basically the number which takes place most commonly in the set. To find the mode in an easy manner, you must arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest. Then, we must count how many times is each number is occurring. Finally, the number that will occur the most will be your mode.

8

EXAMPLE OF MODE

13 , 44 , 88 ,43 ,13 ,33 , 0 , 44 , 13 , 67 , 98 , 13 ,55 ,13

THE MODE IS 13 BECAUSE IT IS OCCURING MOST

9

MEAN

THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE VALUE OF A GROUP OF DATA IS THE MEAN he mean is the usual average, so I'll add and then divide:

(13 + 18 + 13 + 14 + 13 + 16 + 14 + 21 + 13) ÷ 9 = 15

Note that the mean, in this case, isn't a value from the original list. This is a common result. You should not assume that your mean will be one of your original numbers

Multiple Choice

A batsman scored the following number of runs in six innings:

35, 30, 45, 65, 39, 20

The mean runs scored by him in an inning is
